Episode 25- I Like This Little Life

SCENE 1

INT. BRIANNA’S HOUSE

FX: BRIANNA’S BEDROOM

BRIANNA: (V.O.) It’s been the best few weeks and sleepless nights I’ve ever had. I cry just thinking about how blessed I am. Diana has been over here more than I've seen her my entire life. And Jamie talked me into letting his mother, Kat, move into our extra bedroom and help us out. She and I haven’t had the best relationship, but she seems to be coming around. I think it will be good to get to know her better, and maybe being a grandmother will change her view about me. Jamie even took a few weeks of paternity leave to be here.

The babies are beautiful and healthy—everything I asked for. And I thought I would be alone in this; I was all wrong. I didn’t know what to expect, but right now I’m expecting the best. I think I like this little life.

FX: THE DOORBELL RINGS

DIANA: I believe that’s the movers bringing some of Kat’s things over.

BRIANNA: Movers? She’s not staying that long.

DIANA: (WHISPERS) You may want to shake some of her things out. Just a suggestion.

BRIANNA: Diana, don’t.

FX: OPENS THE DOOR

DIANA: (SCREAMS) Jamie, the movers are here. (beat)

DIANA: Brianna, I’m heading to the office. J&J are down, and you should be getting all the rest you can.

BRIANNA: I know. I’m going to take a nap right after I finish this rebuttal for the courts.

DIANA: I told you, I have it handled. I’ll email it to you later for your review. Trust me, if she has a leg to stand on, it will be the only leg she has, because we’ll drag this on forever.

BRIANNA: I love when Diana goes off.

DIANA: Good, ‘cause you need to find a brush. Your outside is always a representation of the inside.

BRIANNA: I only just pushed two humans out a few weeks ago. I think I can brush my hair a few months from now if that’s what I choose.

DIANA: With a partner 18 years your junior? Choose wisely.

INT. NICHOLAS’S HIGH-RISE APARTMENT

FX: NICHOLAS IS MAKING BREAKFAST

HOPE: (V.O.) I woke up this morning to some amazing head and then being served breakfast in bed. Nicholas made me strawberry crepes with a dash of Nutella, scrambled eggs, and coffee better than any Starbucks run. I think I have a boyfriend. Is this the soft life Chanise keeps talking about?

I still have some reservations about our cultural differences; however, when I connect with Nicholas one-on-one, it feels right. I think I like this little life.

NICHOLAS: Did you sleep well?

HOPE: Are you kidding me? With this huge-ass bed and gorgeous view, it’s impossible to have a bad night's sleep.

NICHOLAS: Oh, give the bed all the credit.

HOPE: Of course, I give you credit too.

FX: HOPE AND NICHOLAS MAKE OUT

NICHOLAS: I really enjoy being with you. Your body is one of a kind.

HOPE: Thank you. You’re nice.

NICHOLAS: I have to check out my nephew’s game later. You are welcome to come.

HOPE: Well, ummm, I have to run a few errands. Water my grass and such.

NICHOLAS: Oh.

HOPE: I’ll get going so you can get the day started.

NICHOLAS: You don’t have to leave right this minute. I’m not going anywhere until this afternoon. Stay. We can watch the game or check out a movie.

HOPE: (V.O.) I love how direct and intentional he is, and I always know what he’s thinking. That’s unusual. Besides, I don’t have any grass, but he doesn’t know that. I’m not ready to be around friends and family yet, but spending more time with Nicholas seems easy.

HOPE: So, are you asking me to Netflix and Chill?

NICHOLAS: Or we could do a little more of the other stuff.

INT. CHANISE’S HOUSE - MORNING

FX: LEGEND EATING

LEGEND: I needed this home cooking. Dad can’t cook worth a damn.

CHANISE: Watch your mouth, boy. (beat) Judy doesn’t cook for you?

LEGEND: She does, but I just have to get some of your recipes and show her how to season.

CHANISE: Hmph.

LEGEND: So, what’s up with you and Mickey Mouse?

CHANISE: His name is Mikal. You should be happy your mom is finally dating again. I really like him.

LEGEND: I can tell.

CHANISE: I want you to get to know him.

LEGEND: I think I got to know him very well already.

CHANISE: Legend. It was an accident. How was he supposed to know who you were?

LEGEND: I think I’m scarred for life.

CHANISE: He asked me to move in.

LEGEND: And?

CHANISE: I just wasn’t sure, since I know you’re graduating soon. I want you to have a place to come back to. I didn’t think you would want to move into his big mansion in Hidden Hills.

LEGEND: A mansion? When can we move in? (beat) Naw, I’m joking. Judy and I are thinking about taking a break after college and backpacking around the world.

CHANISE: With what money?

LEGEND: We’ll just do odd jobs and stuff.

CHANISE: Legend, I didn’t spend all that tuition money for you to not use it.

LEGEND: Don’t worry, Mom. I’m going to use it.

CHANISE: So, you think I should do it?

LEGEND: I think, if he’s putting the smile I see on your face, you have my blessing.

CHANISE: (EMOTIONAL) Thank you, baby. That means a lot.

LEGEND: Now I know what I’m going to get you for Christmas.

CHANISE: What?

LEGEND: His and hers robes. I’m going to put his name in big letters on the back.

CHANISE: Silly, finish your food.

CHANISE: (V.O.) Getting the okay from my son is the best gift. He’s happy, I’m happy. What more can a person want? It’s official. I also finished my first semester with all A’s and B’s. Your girl is getting ready to blaze a trail for herself in entrepreneurship. I’m not certain what I want to do yet, but stay tuned. I think I like this little life.

INT. HOPE’S HOUSE

FX: DRIVING AND SINGING ALONG TO A SONG

HOPE:
Three queens in their forties
Picking up what’s left
Glory
From the thirties
Hearts so sturdy
Life’s a journey
Never blurry

[Chorus]
Forties AF
Living our best
Step by step
We pass every test
Friends for life
We ride or die
In the forties
We touch the sky

HOPE: (V.O.) What a day. Here I am. I’m ready to do some things differently and learn some new lessons. My mom finally flew back home, and I guess Faith isn’t talking to me since I told my mother about her situation. She’ll get over it. And Tre is officially off the market. I hope he’s happy. Life is lifting, and I will be at my first staff writing job in a couple of months, right after hiatus.

FX: AUDIO TEXT

HOPE: It’s Olivia sending an audio text. Maybe she has another fancy party invite.

OLIVIA: Hope, it’s Olivia. Have you heard of it? The writer’s strike officially started today, and they sent out a list of canceled shows, and On the Outside is on that list.

HOPE: Nooooooooo!

INT. CHANISE’S HOUSE - EVENING

FX: CHANISE WATCHING TELEVISION

CHANISE: (V.O.) Lionel is late. This is the second time this week. I’m so glad his nanny starts next week because I can’t keep doing this. Especially for free. My Bluey watching days will soon be over.

FX: LAUGHTER FROM LITTLE GIRL. DOORBELL RINGS

CHANISE: I think this may be your daddy.

FX: DOORBELL RINGS AGAIN

CHANISE: I’m coming.

FX: CHANISE OPENS THE DOOR

CHANISE: Where have you been?

LIONEL: At work. I was running a little late tonight.

CHANISE: And the night before that and the night before that one. Look, Lionel—

FX: LIONEL HANDS HER AN ENVELOPE

CHANISE: What’s this?

LIONEL: Just a little thank you.

CHANISE: You don’t have to—

LIONEL: Yes, I do. I owe you a lot more than this, Chanise. Whatever you’re holding against me, I hope you can forgive me. There’s a lot more thank you’s where that came from. ‘Cause I do. Owe you.

CHANISE: Are you sure?

LIONEL: Positive.

FX: LIONEL LEANS OVER AND KISSES HER ON THE CHEEK

CHANISE: LaNisa, your dad’s ready to go.

LANISA: See you later.

CHANISE: Bye, baby. And if you need anything, give me a call.

CHANISE: (V.O.) I exhaled all the hurt and pain that I was feeling at that very moment. I guess there is such a thing as closure. And as I watched Lionel walk down the driveway carrying his baby on his shoulders, a figure walked past him and straight up the driveway.

I almost shut the door, but as my vision cleared, I could see it was my mom.

CHANISE: Mom? Is that you?

INT. BRIANNA’S HOUSE

FX: BABIES CRYING

BRIANNA: (V.O.) It’s my turn to get up. Jamie is sleeping like a baby.

FX: WALKS OVER TO THE BEDROOMS

BRIANNA: Sshhh, okay. Momma’s here.

BRIANNA: (V.O.) I’ve finally got a grip on this tandem nursing thing. OUCH! They’ve got a grip on me. (exhale) So precious. Jamie Jr. looks so much like his father, and Janelle has my eyes. They are both so perfect. I think I’ll listen to something motivational.

BRIANNA: Alexa, play the motivational audio “The Message.”

ALEXA: Messages from Brianna’s phone.

BRIANNA: No, no… Alexa.

ALEXA: We’re trying to reach Brianna. This is Samantha from Dr. Havana’s office at the LA IVF clinic. I wanted to reach out personally because I have some difficult news regarding your recent procedure.

It appears there may have been a mix-up at the sperm bank. They reached out to us with a concern that the wrong sperm sample could have been sent, which means we need to confirm with a DNA check to ensure Jamie is indeed the biological father.

I am so sorry for any distress this may cause, and I completely understand how unexpected and unsettling this might feel. Please give me a call back as soon as you’re able so we can go over the next steps together. Thank you, and again, I apologize deeply for this mix-up and any difficulty it causes.

BRIANNA: A DNA check?
